ARTISAN HANDWOVEN COTTON
Created in Cambodia, our handwoven cotton provides fair employment for rural families who were previously living in poverty. Reviving skills that were lost in the 1970’s Khmer Rouge regime, this enterprise rebuilt a lost cultural art through sheer hard work. By using traditional Khmer skills and techniques, families are given the opportunity to regain their livelihood by offering fair wages, the ability to work from home, flexibility for mothers to work and care for their children at the same time, as well as support for children to progress from school to a university level. Produced entirely by hand, the cotton is spun into thread and is then dyed using natural and organic materials such as local barks, vegetable skins and flowers. The thread is then handwoven on a loom. This enterprise is recognised by the International Trade Centre as providing an effective solution to poverty in rural Cambodia and is certified by the World Fair Trade Organisation (WFTO). The finished fabric is gentle and textured on the skin, with a 'perfectly imperfect' weave and soft drape.
